About Us
The Well Hung Butcher was founded in 2016 and is owned by AgWild; a group of Conservancies and regenerative livestock producers in Laikipia, Kenya.
Our producers are committed to raising livestock in a management system that conserves biodiversity and wildlife, while building a stronger rural economy.
Why choose Well Hung Butcher beef?
100% Traceable
WHB is owned by AgWild, a cooperative of conservancies and regenerative farms in the Laikipia and Mt Kenya area. All livestock processed by WHB is sourced directly from our Members, raised according to high standards of sustainability and animal welfare. We can assure our customers of quality and integrity throughout our supply chain - right back to the farmer.
Grass-fed
All our beef is born and raised on natural grasslands. Studies have shown grass-fed beef to be higher in vitamins A, E, and other antioxidants, with significantly lower levels of saturated fat compared to grain-fed beef.
Responsible Land Use
Our livestock are farmed “regeneratively” which means that animals are grazed intensively before moving on to allow plant recovery. This builds soil over time, storing carbon and supporting a healthy ecosystem including wildlife. By moving cattle across the landscape as nature intended, our producers can reduce the impact on the environment and minimize use of artificial chemicals.
Zero Added Hormones
Intensive beef production systems often use hormones to stimulate growth and production. Traces of these added hormones will naturally carry through into meat products produced in this way. While there is limited evidence to suggest this is harmful to consumers, AgWild/WHB producers do not use any added hormones in our production system.
Low Antibiotic Use
The majority of our animals never get antibiotics and our producers use antibiotics only to treat sick livestock (for welfare reasons). All animals undergo minimum withdrawal periods before being processed for human consumption. Antibiotics are used in intensive feedlot systems because animals are confined and have high grain diets which increases disease risk. Too much antibiotic use promotes the growth of drug-resistant bacteria and can leave traces in meat if not managed correctly.
High Animal Welfare
Cattle are ruminants and they evolved to roam and eat forages like grass and hay, not grain. Allowing them to eat healthy diets and live natural lives is the highest form of animal welfare. When our livestock are slaughtered this is done quickly and compassionately at a high- grade facility that minimizes stress and impact on the animals.
You, as a food buyer, have the distinct privilege of proactively participating in shaping the world your children will inherit.
